Fishtown Cries Out for Resolution to Philadelphia's Staffing Crisis

On May 26, 2022, a pizza shop collapsed in Fishtown, followed quickly by the partial collapse of a North Philadelphia apartment building. These incidences show a staffing crisis affecting Philadelphia, resulting in one in seven municipal vacancies and skyrocketing numbers of homicides. Blamed on low wages and lack of benefits, the crisis has prevented essential services from being provided and the City Council has proposed a bill to lift the residency requirement. This is a strategic fault line between those who argue for the requirement to diversify the city’s workforce and those who argue it hinders qualified applicants. The mayor is looking to speed up the resolution of the staffing crisis and Fishtown stands as an example of why it's so important.
